All About Choosing a Career in Design
There was a time when engineering or medicine was considered to be the safest career choice. Times are changing and so are the career preferences of millennials. For those with a creative bone, nothing beats a career in design. Design as a profession offers numerous opportunities to people with different talents, skills and even different educational backgrounds.

And every field need design experts to create customer-friendly products and interfaces that will help generate a sustainable demand for them.
Understanding the Specializations
No qualification can make a designer. Only a creative mind and ability to innovate can make one. As per one’s interests and skills, there are multiple fields to choose from. This includes fashion design, communication design, interiors design, footwear design, automobile design, graphics and visualization, web design, industrial design, product design, game and multimedia design, jewellery design and more the list is endless.
To choose your career in design, you need to first narrow down your specialization. It is through reflective learning and observation that a candidate can decide on a future prospect of life. Research and study about the lives of people working in different fields of design. Imagine yourself in their places and assess which role would suit you the most. To pursue a career in design, there is no compulsion to study particular subject during your high school or undergraduate studies. However, there are some eligibility criteria to gain admission at some of the best Design schools.
Students usually don’t get to study fashion or design related subjects in school. Whatever our education system lacks until 10+2, is compensated when one gets into some of the most esteemed design institutes in India. NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) and NID (National Institute of Design) are the most popular of all, often regarded as dream colleges for design aspirants. The IDC School of Design under IIT Bombay, Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology and Pearl Academy are among some of the top institutes which offer courses in design.
The senior secondary school exam (10 +2) must be compulsorily cleared by a candidate to be eligible for any kind of undergraduate course in Design. Different colleges across the country have their own criterion of eligibility but it mostly revolves around an overall percentage to be a minimum of 50% or above. A graduation degree is a must with 50% marks in aggregate for a candidate to pursue any kind of post graduation course in design. Other conditions are institute specific and students are recommended to go through the website of the institute that they are planning to apply to.
Entrance examinations in Design
There are various entrance examinations for design aspirants to secure a coveted seat at some of the most popular design institutes across the country:
- Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED)
- National Institute of Design Entrance Exam
- National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Exam
- Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED)
- All India Entrance Examination for Design (AIEED)
The syllabus for all of the above listed examinations is almost similar and consists of General Science, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, English Grammar and Comprehension and High School Mathematics. The exams also feature a creativity aptitude test in order to evaluate illustration skills, imagination, innovative mind, visualization skills, pictorial perceptions and more.
Preparing for the entrance tests requires practice, dedication and creativity honing. Entrance coaching may be required as our current school syllabus does not have subjects that cater to the creative aptitude test institutes. Understanding your weaknesses and taking help from design mentor and artists can make all the difference and give you the courage to pursue your aspiration with confidence.
