A new initiative has been taken where a course on M.Tech in high performance computing (HPC) and data sciences (DS) will be provided for the academic year 2017-18. Several other crash courses on HPC such as short term and long term courses will also be offered in 29 institutes across India.

A group of experts from National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) gathered at a meeting that was held on February 7 at the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Surat. Chairperson of NSM, Jaya Panvalkar along with the board of governors was also present at the meeting. Ministry of HRD, department of science and technology, IITs, NITs, IISERs had representatives who took part in the meeting.

Chairperson of NSM, Jaya Panvalkar said that they are planning to train 20,000 people in this field for a period of 7 years. The programme for all 29 institutes in India will comprise of eight IITs, nine NITS, three IIITs, five central universities, and three IISERs.

Associate Director of HPC-Tech, Ashish Kuvelkar, said that the focus was not on computer science students but on other graduate students and HPC is quite helpful in a variety of specialized fields. A meteorological scientist will know how things work in his field and will also be familiar with various methodologies but may not have a proper understanding of HPC. But if he is given proper training, he will be able to utilize HPC to further his research in predicting the weather more precisely.
